Large 50 Plate Wort Chiller Faster than the 40 Plate which has a Max flow rate to chill 210° to 68° = 2.5gpm time to chill 5 gallons = about 2 minutes! More than Double the Therminator surface area! Wort Chillers are a fast way to chill your wort to yeast pitching temperature to get your fermentation off to a quick and healthy start. This plate type heat exchanger, is a miniature version of the plate chillers that the pros use. This model is made of 50 plates of 304 Stainless Steel that have been brazed together with 99.9%pure copper in an oxygen-free furnace. The Chiller has small ripples up and down each plate. This creates more surface area for the wort to travel over and more time for the water to cool the wort down. More importantly the ripples on each plate create a turbulent flow, eliminating laminar flow to ensure the wort cools fast. Wort Chillers use less water than conventional immersion or counterflow chillers. It is especially great for brewers in hot climates! These chillers have very low flow restriction, making them ideal for gravity feed and reducing the risk of plugging from hot break and hop fragments. Wort may be pumped or gravity fed through the chiller. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS Cleaning a plate chiller is a bit more involved than a normal immersion chiller, due to the tiny pockets created by the channels in the plates. These pockets can harbor cold break material, hop remains, or any other solid, and if not removed can cause infection in subsequent batches. The best way to clean is to recirculate a solution of hot water and Powder Brewery Wash (PBW) through the chiller as normal, then back flush the chiller. Pushing cleaning solution into the "Wort Out" side and out of the "Wort In" side. This will remove any particles that may have gotten trapped by the ridges on the plates. Performance In order to provide a standardized base of comparison for our chillers, we use a consistent set of parameters, based on these temperatures and flow rates we have calculated the maximum flow rate for each chiller to still achieve the desired target temperature. Wort outlet flow should be controlled by restricting either the inlet or outlet of the chiller with a valve or Ther-monitor assembly. If your incoming water temperature is higher than 55° or your water flow rate is less than 5 gpm, flow rate will need to be reduced further, and it may take a little longer to chill your batch. Our performance ratings are based on the following parameters: Starting wort temperature = 210°F Desired wort Temperature at outlet = 68°F Water temperature used for chilling = 55° Flow Rate of chilling water = 5gpm How it Works Hot Wort passes from the port on the left of the heat exchanger through every other channel created by the plates to the opposite end port on the left of the heat exchanger (looking at it the long way). Cold Water passes from the port on the right through the other channels created by the plates and comes out the other port on the right side. The fluids are essentially touching each other through the plates and heat is transferred from the hot fluid to the cold fluid. (but the fluids do not mix) Plate heat exchangers have significantly good heat transfer rates because they use metal plates which have high heat conductivity rates and the plates are extremely thin. The plate heat exchangers also achieve high amounts of heat transfer through convective forces with both working fluids.
